The unit's mission was to get absent kids back in school. The unit began with six full-time deputies spread across all of the Canadian County Schools. Sheriff Edwards and Judge Miller created the Juvenile Investigations Division in 2011. In their daily work, the Sheriff and Judge saw a contributing factor to kids getting in trouble was missing school. The juvenile investigation division was an idea former Sheriff Randal Edwards and former District Judge Gary Miller. We also conduct routine checks of offenders at their homes to ensure the information they provided is accurate and they're living were they report to be residing. Failure to register is a crime and we present charges to the Canadian County District Attorney's Office for offenders who fail to register timely. We on average register about 20 offenders who must re-register every 90 days. The Sheriff's Office is responsible for registering all sex offenders, residing in Canadian County, outside of a city limit. This position has resulted in the removal of many endangered children from unsafe environments. Criminal charges are presented to the District Attorney’s Office when appropriate. The assigned Deputy works with the state Department of Human Services in Canadian County with child neglect and endangerment cases. The Investigations Division staffs a full time Deputy to investigate child welfare cases. The Computer Crimes and Forensic Unit also is assigned the responsibility of identifying and arresting online child predators. The Computer Crimes and Forensic Unit provides a trained and certified Deputy who can examine, analyze and report computer evidence used in criminal activity. The Investigations Division houses a Computer Crimes and Forensic Unit. These two task forces bring additional federal and state resources to the sheriff’s office in our drug enforcement efforts. The DEA task force focuses on higher level, multi jurisdictional illicit drug activity. This task force, is comprised of multiple law enforcement agencies. The Sheriff’s Office has also assigned a full time Deputy to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) task force. The task force is housed at the Sheriff’s Office and focuses on illegal drug activity in Canadian and surrounding counties. The Sheriff’s Office has teamed with the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (OBNDD) to create a narcotics task force. The Investigations Divisions has two full time and one reserve Deputy assigned to narcotics investigations. The other Investigative Deputies are assigned to focus on specific areas of interest including illegal drugs, computer crimes and forensics, and child welfare. They investigate cases that involve Burglary, Homicide, Missing and endangered people, Robbery, Unattended or suspicious deaths, Other violent and nonviolent crime. Four full time and two reserve deputies in the Investigations Division are general assignment.
